What Is a Persona?The most basic definition of a persona is a role or character.
In the context of user experience design, a persona is a quick and easy way to simulate product or process use by target demographics. Personas are often used in conjunction with rapid prototyping, troubleshooting, and preparing for real trials. A user experience design team will often create several personas, each of which represent an archetype of users. For a high school trying to model new teaching techniques, these archetypes might be: “The academic over-achievers”, “Sports/ band focused”, “The apathetic/ checked-out”, “Steady-Eddies”. While some students might not perfectly fit into any category, and others might fall into more than one, these categories cover a large amount of typical cases within the scope of the model. Roughly one persona is created per archetype. The persona is meant to humanize the archetype and can benefit greatly by being given a name, face, and unique attributes alongside the average character traits of the given archetype. Not only will these details humanize the archetype, but also it will fuel a design team’s creativity and boost engagement during activities that incorporate the personas. |
